Courtney Miller is a decorated athlete.
"She is all about her team," boasted Buckhannon-Upshur High School Swim Coach Sarah Chenoweth. "Swimming is really an individual sport and she's not all about being an individual. She's about seeing her team succeed and everyone on her team. She likes winning her races but she likes seeing her teammates win their races too and you'll always notice after a race, she'll always congratulate the people beside her in the lanes beside her which is definitely sportsmanship and that's definitely important in an athlete."
"I've always been better at the backstroke than the freestyle," admitted Miller. "I can feel the water in the backstroke more than I can the freestyle. So, sophomore year when I won my first state championship it was a great feeling and it felt like everything had finally paid off."
That was the first of Miller's two state championships in the 100 Backstroke. She holds the state record in the event and is undefeated in her senior year at Buckhannon-Upshur.
"She's really good at pushing herself and going to her max," said Coach Chenoweth. "A lot of her goals this season have been to break pool records. So even though she knows she can beat the people in the pool beside her, she still sets goals above and beyond to be the best she can be."
"I felt like if I pushed myself in practice, even though I'm not the fastest sprinter on the team, the fastest butterflyer, I make sure I win all those sets in practice. I push myself," said Miller. "I think that's what makes me who I am, is my work ethic."
Courtney is obviously very talented in the pool but that didn't come without hard work and overcoming a little adversity.
"When it came back positive for Crohn's, I was scared because I didn't know what that was and the first thought that went through my head was, 'How is this going to effect me and my swimming?'," explained Miller about how she felt after discovering she suffers from Crohn's disease in November of 2010. "I've had some hard times, been in the hospital a lot, but I think it's important not to let anything get you down. I just try to push through it. A lot of people have told me that I'm not going to be able to continue to swim with Crohn's but I think that's what makes me want to keep doing it, is people telling me that I can't."
Crohn's is an autoimmune disease and causes Miller to have pain flare ups. That hasn't stopped her from getting in the pool every day and it won't. Courtney has already signed a letter of intent to swim at WVU.
"I'm really looking forward to going to college, continue it and see what I can really do with this," said Miller. "Hopefully, I really want to speak out and tell my story so people that have the same disease as me and some like it know that it's possible to achieve."
Since she already has two state championships and a record, Miller's goal this year is to set the WVU pool record at the state meet.
"It's really exciting because you get to watch her in her meets and she just pulls away from all the other swimmers but she still gets nervous and she's still even excited like every other swimmer you have that isn't a first place swimmer," said Coach Chenoweth. "So it's kind of fun to see that."
