Marion County Senior Center Continues Hot Meal Deliveries

FAIRMONT -

Each and every morning, cooks at the John Manchin Senior Health Care Center are whipping up a storm.

They have hundreds of mouths to feed thanks to a new partnership with the Marion County Senior Center

Right now, the senior center delivers more than 100 hot meals to senior citizens throughout the county.

While the program is thriving right now, it almost came to a halt last fall.

The JMSHCC said it stepped in when it found out that Fairmont General Hospital would no longer offer meals to the senior center.

The menus are specially designed for senior citizens, said Dietary Manager Sheryl Screen

"You might have five of these diets, 10 diabetic diets, you have some that are texture modified that you would puree up. It was all new to us just to be cooking in bulk," she said.

The new partnership has allowed the senior center to continue feeding the elderly and deliver food to both the Fairview Senior Center and Mannington Senior Center.

Patrick Talbert goes to the JMSHCC every morning to pick up the hot food.

"I take it back to the senior center and then we have a place set up to dish it out and then we put it in the trays and go from there. We put them in the cars and deliver them," he said.

Screen is happy they can provide a service that was almost discontinued.

"I do believe it is a very much needed service and one that needs to continue and they could probably use funding for more of them," she said.

To apply for the meal delivery service, call the Marion County Senior Center at 304-366-8779.

Executive Director Debbie Harvey said there is currently a waiting list but new spots open up every month.
