Lawyer Patrick Morrisey Files to Run for Attorney General

Posted: Updated:

Jefferson County Republican Patrick Morrisey announced Monday that he has filed to run for Attorney General against five-term incumbent, Darrell McGraw, according to a news release from Patrick Morrisey.

Morrisey is a resident of Harpers Ferry and is a health care lawyer, according to the news release.

Morrisey said he plans to take a new look at the role of Office of Attorney General and bring a new perspective on efforts to repeal Obamacare, curb federal and state government over-regulation, provide competent counsel on Medicaid matters and advance meaningful ethics reform.

"Twenty years in one office is just too long," Morrisey said. "We need a strong, new voice – someone with the experience, knowledge, and leadership to change the Office of Attorney General and help restrain Washington's appetite for spending, regulations, and mandates."

Morrisey emphasizes his strong disagreement in the news release with the incumbent on overturning Obamacare.

Along with repealing Obamacare, Morrisey said he is committed to changing the ethics environment in W.Va. and challenging excessive federal and state regulations that make the state one of the most unfriendly climates for starting and maintaining a business.

"One of the reasons that West Virginia ranks at the bottom of most major economic indicators in the country is because its legal system is hostile to business," Morrisey said. "As Attorney General, I will fight to turn the state's legal climate around and champion strong ethics reform."

Morrisey is originally from New Jersey where he earned a bachelor of arts in history and politic science, with honors, from Rutgers College. He also earned a juris doctor from Rutgers Law School in Newark, according to the news release.

Morrisey is married and has a step daughter, officials said.
