BRIDGEPORT -
A local man has turned his love of ice cream into a very 'sweet' business that includes more than 45 unique flavors.
Mike Bennawit has always had a passion for cooking.
In 2010, his love of food took a turn when he started to play around with his Kitchen Aid Mixer and ice cream attachment.
That's when Mikey B's ice cream was born.
Mikey B's ice cream includes almost 50 crazy and unique flavors, like rice crispy treat and butterfinger caramel.
"We have a birthday cake which is fairly new here, probably within the last two weeks," Bennawit said. "Also, a red velvet cup cake. We can't keep that one pretty much in the store. When that one comes in, normally we're on Twitter, Facebook telling people that it's back in stock."
Bennawit makes the flavors in Jane Lew and sells it at Candy Unlimited in the Meadowbrook Mall.
His special ice cream base is unlike anything you'll find in the state, he said.
"It's a lot more smooth, it's a lot more dense and you're going to find it a lot more creamier than just normal ice cream. And, it's not like a soft serve ice cream, it's a true hard serve ice cream," he said.
Bennawit is also a huge fan of social media. His most recent creation is a dark chocolate peanut butter swirl which was created with the help of customer feedback on Facebook and Twitter.
Mikey B's relies on its customers to create exclusive and decadent flavors.
Bennawit has dreams to open his own ice cream parlor one day but for now, he is enjoying the ride that all started in his kitchen.
"Hard work pays off. Don't get frustrated. Of course starting out it's always hard. Just always keep focused of what your goals are," he said.
Bennawit also has gluten-free options and a new diabetic friendly base he's experimenting with.
