Jacob Bower unexpectedly died last July while training at West Point. If you ask anyone in the East Fairmont community, they will tell you Jacob was an extraordinary human being and one they continue to honor to this day.
"He was a definite role model amongst the kids. He was a great student and athlete. He was an all around great person. The turnout we have here is definitely a tribute to what he was. And that's what we wanted for tonights event," East Fairmont assistant wrestling coach Rick Bailey said.
East Fairmont high school has not forgotten about Jacob Bower and on Thursday night they honored their fallen brother by raising nearly $1,300 dollars for the Wounded Warriors Project in his memory.
But maybe the most intriguing storyline of the event lies with Todd Rundle and a decision he has made to honor his friend.
"I've gotten nominations from two Senators from West Virginia and I'm in the final stages of applying to West Point. Right now I'm just waiting to see if I'm accepted or not and I hope to get accepted and go there in honor of his name," East Fairmont wrestler Todd Rundle said.
"East Fairmont itself has a pretty good tradition of sending students to service academies. So with Todd Rundle looking to follow Jacob and Hunter Wood who's there now, he's a former wrestler for us at West Point. It's good to have another kid from our team heading in that direction," Bailey said.
