CLARKSBURG -
Literacy Volunteers of Harrison County hosted a volunteer training class in Clarksburg.
The class is the first in a series designed to prepare volunteers to help both kids and adults learn to read or improve their reading level.
Organizers said that being able to read at a higher level is so important.
"People my parents' age could drop out of school when they were 14, and you could get a fabulous job and go on to retirement. But times changed, and now you need a higher literacy level plus you need computer training, you need higher math levels," said Kim Payne, who helps to coordinate the group's efforts.
Organizers with Literacy Volunteers said 20 percent of people in Harrison County can't read above a third grade level.
