Fairmont State Hosts State's Largest Cross-Fit Competition

Posted: Updated:

Here at the Flacons Center on the campus of Fairmont State University Saturday was overrun with Cross-Fitters from all across the region. Of course by now we should know what Cross Fit is, the combination of strength and endurance exercises, but as this sports grows nationally, its also growing locally and this event is a great example of that.

"We do have the largest in state competition, theres been other competitions held in other cities in the state but we have more participation we have a bigger overall event, more sponsors, this has really mushroomed into the premier event in the state," Intense Cross Fit Gym owner Johnny Layne said.

"Darcy comes in with just a great skill set anyways, a lot of work ethic and an athletes heart, and that's hard to teach somebody. She already has that instilled in her. What we have to do is teach her the sport of Cross Fit. She still has weaknesses and things we have to work on but she's dedicated to work on that," Layne added.

This event also held a "novice" division for Cross-Fitters who like the idea of competing, while going against people with similar abilities. For local athlete Darcy Thompson, whose only been doing Cross Fit for a few months, this event should prepare her for future competitions.

"My goals are to take it day by day, always try to beat your time, beat your reps, beat your head, just go day by day and I'll keep trying," Thompson added.

Organizers of this event say that they want to make this a tri or bi yearly event. If you want to get involved with Cross Fit, well what are you waiting for? Now is the time to get involved.
