West Virginia Wesleyan Men's Basketball has a long and storied history. Every victory is memorable but Saturday's 93-73 win over Ohio Valley will be remembered for years to come because Raymont McElroy scored 48 points. As far as the record books can tell, that's a school record for points in a game by an individual player.
"Coach didn't really say anything. He just told me to take the open shots," recalled McElroy. "I played within the offense. It was just like I was taking shots, taking bad shots, reading the defense, popping, popping the screen and shots were just going in. It just felt good. It was amazing feeling."
"It was probably the quietest, most low-key 48 points I've ever seen because everything came within the concepts of our offense," said WVWC Men's Basketball Coach Jim Boone. "It wasn't like he was doing anything one-on-one or outlandish to draw your attention."
In just that one game, McElroy was 16-27 from the floor, 6-10 from behind the arc. He missed just one free throw in 11 attempts.
"But the most important thing my coaches told me was it all got started in the first half when I was shooting free throws and doing layups and just playing within it," said McElroy. "After that, Kelsey [Williams] got out I had to get real aggressive. Whenever Kelsey gets out, I have to be aggressive."
Thirty-one of McElroy's 48 came in the second half. If he continues that type of production, teams may have to change how they defend the Bobcats.
"Probably, if anything, it put the ‘x' on his chest that, ‘Hey here's a guy we've got to stop.' But I think he's dealt with that. He's played through that," commented Coach Boone. "Ray is a very experienced player and will be able to handle that well."
With the school record and this season's highest point total in the conference, Raymont McElroy still has goals, including a WVIAC championship.
