Grafton High School Honors Past Basketball Star

Posted: Updated:

A Grafton High School legend was honored Friday evening for his accomplishments on the court.

Floyd "Scotty" Hamilton was a star basketball player for Grafton in the late 1930's, and on Friday night the school renamed its gymnasium in his honor.

The Grafton community still regards Hamilton as the greatest player in school history more than 70 years after his last game there.

"I think it's true. He was. They said he had eyes in the back of his head. I never saw him play, but they said he was good," said daughter-in-law Jan Hamilton.

"People have really looked forward to this because he did so much for Grafton High School and for West Virginia University that certainly he deserves this, and like I said, he was one of the all time great athletes that Grafton has ever had," said Grafton High School Athletic Director Rich Bord.

After starring at Grafton, Hamilton went on to lead WVU to an NIT championship in 1942, earning him hall of fame honors there.
