WVIAC Spotlight: Wesleyan Women Play4Kay

Women's basketball teams across the country do their part to help fight women's cancers.

Our local colleges like to help out too.

There was a lot of pink to be seen in the Rockefeller Center at West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. The Lady Bobcats participated in the Play4Kay initiative, which raises awareness and funds for breast cancer research in memory of the late Kay Yow, former women's basketball coach at North Carolina State.

"I know Kay Yow. When I was coaching at Delaware State I actually played in her tournament and I still have the big, nice, beautiful clock that she gave as gifts hanging up in my house," recalled WVWC Women's Basketball Coach Jackie DeVane. "She was a great coach and a great person. It just means a lot for me to be able to still give back and honor her in that way."

"In my opinion, I think everybody knows somebody that has breast cancer, whether it's a relative or friend, so it's nice to reach out, especially for the community and the other teams in the conference to do it. I think it kind of unifies us as one, being a women's basketball team, " commented WVWC senior Forward Jamie Kaufman. "One of us could be affected in the future so I think it's really nice and just brings us all together."

Shepherd donned pink too but Wesleyan took it further, sporting full pink uniforms and donating half the gate from the game.

"It's kind of something that shows that even though we are on a sports team, we do have a feminine side and it's kind of nice to just have a month where we can wear the uniforms and recognize people that we've lost and that we cherish," said Kaufman.
