The 2012 West Virginia State High School Swim meet started Thursday with the preliminaries but Friday morning it was time to crown the champions.
In the early session, the girls brought three straight state records crashing down as the WVU Natatorium was once again the stage for these athletes to shine on.
In the 200 Yard Free Style Relay Elkins and Morgantown battled to the very end but the Tigers' team of Samantha Hall, Christa Varner, Kayla Gainer and Delany Johnson would get the win, setting a new state record in the event, beating Morgantown's time set last year.
A name we've heard a lot about in the pool is Buckhannon-Upshur's Courtney Miller. She helped the Lady Bucs win the 200 Yard Medley Relay earlier in the day, then topped off her morning with a new state record in the 100 Yard Backstroke, beating her own record set last year by more than a second.
It all came down to the main event of the day, the 400 yard freestyle relay. The fastest team in the state tuned out to be the Elkins Tigers once again. It was a fight with Morgantown through most of the race but the team of Hall, Varner, Gainer and Johnson set a new state record by beating Morgantown's time once again, by more than two seconds.
As for the team results, it was very close but for the second year in a row the Morgantown girls took home the team championship narrowly edging out George Washington by just six points. Buckhannon-Upshur came in third followed by Elkins in fourth. Notre Dame rounded out the top five.
