Reporter ahines@wboy.com I joined WBOY in September 2010, and am looking forward to working here in Clarksburg! I'm a native of Western Pennsylvania and a graduate of Westminster College (Go Titans!),

A local United Way chapter hit its mark a little early this year.

The United Way of Gilmer, Lewis, and Upshur County celebrated reaching their annual fund-raising goal with a Mardi Gras-themed dinner at Stonewall Resort tonight.

Director Beckie Sias says they usually reach the mark shortly after the event each year.

Funds from the United Way go a long way to providing services to many communities.

"And they're all nonprofit agencies that depend a lot on the money that we give them, because they're helping people pay utility bills and help with food," Sias said.

Joyce Harris-Thacker, who works with both the United Way and some of the organizations it supports agreed with Sias.

"The United Way funds are just instrumental in bringing services to our local nonprofits," Harris-Thacker said.

The organization will still accept donations for this year's campaign, and is already looking ahead to next year.
