MORGANTOWN -

An on-duty Monongalia County Sheriff's Deputy was killed early Saturday morning in a car accident.

Sergeant Michael Todd May, 41, was working a midnight shift on D.U.I. patrol, when his vehicle was struck by a driver under the influence on Interstate 79 just over the Pennsylvania line.

A press release from the Waynesburg Detachment of the Pennsylvania State Police stated that Jerod Alan Green, 35, of Morgantown was being investigated for a hit and run on Easton Hill Road.

Granville Police located Green's vehicle traveling on Route 100 in Monongalia County.

Officers initiated a stop and deputies from the Monongalia County Sheriff's Department arrived to assist.

Deputies made contact with Green, who appeared to be intoxicated. He refused to exit his vehicle and instead fled the scene.

During the pursuit, Green traveled onto Route 19 and then merged onto I-79.

Sgt. May was called in for backup and was stationed in the median on I-79.

Sheriff Kisner believes Sgt. May was attempting to get in front of Green to stop the chase when Green got onto I-79.

The Sheriff's Department estimates Green's truck was traveling at about 70 miles per hour when it struck Sgt. May's stopped vehicle.

Sgt. May was transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead as a result of injuries sustained in the collision.

Green was taken into custody, but the charges against him are not known at this time.

Blood tests to determine his blood alcohol content are pending.

Pennsylvania State Police will be investigating the accident.

Green was living in Morgantown working with Marcellus Shale.

Sgt. May was a 10-year veteran of the Monongalia County Sheriff's Department.

He is survived by his mother, father and brother.
