BELINGTON -
Zumba is making a splash at the Belington Wellness Center in Barbour County.
Class participants don't bring their sneakers or yoga pants.
"They wear their bathing suits," said Amy Prichard, a frequent Aqua Zumba participant.
"They come in their bathing suits," agreed Marlana Pennington, Aqua Zumba Instructor at Belington Wellness Center.
It's similar to other Zumba class you may have seen or done.
"Classic water aerobics with Latin rhythms. We also do Reggaetone, Cumbia, Salsa steps," Pennington said.
The biggest difference is where the class takes place.
"You're doing the Samba steps under the water. You move a little bit slower and you have to use the force of the water," Prichard said.
"We have a good time. It's like a pool party" Pennington said.
The pool adds challenge, and Pennington said there are benefits to taking the class in the pool.
"One great thing about Aqua Zumba as well is that you get four times harder the workout because you are fighting resistance instead of gravity," Pennington said.
Aqua Zumba also reduces tension on the joints.
"Easier on the joints and we use large muscle movements," Pennington said.
"The Aqua Zumba isn't as hard on my legs and knees and it kind of relaxes me," Prichard said.
Aqua Zumba classes are held on Saturdays and Mondays at the Belington Wellness Center. For more information contact the Belington Wellness Center at 304-823-1800.
