The NASA office in Fairmont hosted a statewide competition Saturday afternoon.

Three groups of high school students competed in the Governor's Cup, an aviation competition where teams had to model and test an airplane design.

The three teams submitted a paper and presented their work to a panel of judges.

Since students make many career decisions in high school, organizers say competitions like this can have a big impact.

"We feel that while providing some learning activities help and engage them, it's programs like these competitions that really change students' mind in terms of career paths, and also in this case give them real skills that are something that can be use in the industry," said State Coordinator Todd Ensign.

The Aether Aeronautics team from Cabell-Midland won this year, and will go on to compete in the national competition.
