Police Charge Driver with First Degree Murder in Deputy Death

Posted: Updated:

Jerod Green, 35, of Morgantown, faces first degree murder of a law enforcement officer, homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence and nine other charges in Pennsylvania for the death of a Monongalia County Sheriff's Deputy early Saturday morning.

What began as a traffic stop in Monongalia County turned into a chase over the state line.

A press release from the Waynesburg Detachment of the Pennsylvania State Police said Green was being investigated for a hit and run on Easton Hill Road.

Granville Police and deputies stopped Green on Route 100, when they said he appeared to be intoxicated. Green refused to get out of his truck, and sped away.

Sgt. Todd May, 41, was called in to assist other deputies who were pursuing Green in a pickup truck.

Pennsylvania State Police said Green was headed north on Rt. 19 when he crossed the state line, and merged onto Interstate 79 south.

Monongalia County Sheriff Allen Kisner believes May stationed his cruiser in the median of the highway, in order to get in front of Green and stop the chase.

Only, Green failed to stop. His truck collided with Sgt. May's cruiser at what police estimate as 70 miles per hour.

May was later pronounced dead at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

Green was taken there for treatment, and later arrested. He's currently being held in the Greene County Jail without bond.

His full list of charges are:
