FAIRMONT -
A Fairmont woman is giving back to a non-profit organization with the help of her all-natural bath products..
Heather Sawyer created 'The Little Earth Company' in 2008, an all natural and organic bath and body line.
The idea came after the birth of her first son.
"When my son was born, he developed eczema. I did some research and found out that one of the best homemade cures for eczema was homemade soap," she said.
She made her first batch of soap in her kitchen and has been cooking up a storm ever since.
Her homemade soap cleared up her son's eczema and she started to think she could turn her experiment into something more.
That's when 'The Little Earth Company' was created.
Heather makes all of her products in the comfort of her own kitchen.
The soap making process, while fun for Sawyer, isn't as easy as it sounds.
"You melt down the oils, and one you get them to a certain temperature and get the lye to a certain temperature, you mix those up and it starts a chemical reaction. Once that chemical reaction starts, you can pour that into the mold," she said.
Once the mixture is poured into the soap box, it has to cool for about a day.
From there, Sawyer cuts the soap into blocks and let's it 'cure' for four weeks. Then, it's ready to be sold.
The Little Earth Company has grown to include soaps, bath salts, sugar scrubs, and even lip balm.
Last spring, Heather decided she wanted to use her business for something more than just selling all natural goods.
She partnered with American Forests, a non-profit organization that works to protect America's forests.
She has vowed to plant a tree for every new customer she gets, 10 trees for every custom order she gets.
"We started doing some research and one of the reasons we picked American Forests was because they plant the trees where they're needed most," she said.
She's already up to 74 trees and hopes to have many more planted by the end of the year.
American Forests has planted almost 40 million trees since 1990.
