With pools finally opening up and temperatures usually rising, Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer. But you wouldn't have known judging by how empty local pools were Saturday, when temperatures lingered in the 60s.
West Virginia State Police has a new Mountaineer among its forces.
Former WVU football player Zachary Cooper had his first day on the job at Weston's state police detachment.
Cooper is a Weirton native, and said last week's incident in Elkins didn't rattle him in his decision to become a state trooper.
"That's what you sign up for out there," Cooper said. "Protection the citizens of WV, that's why you do the job."
Cooper spent seven months at the state police academy and now has three training in the field.
