Fatal Accident on I-79 Shuts Down Southbound Lanes

An accident Sunday evening killed one person and sent another to the hospital.

Around 7:45 p.m., Monongalia County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a two vehicle accident on Interstate 79 at near the 158 mile marker.

Sheriff's deputies said Donald Eugene Watson, 54 of McMurray, Pennsylvania, was traveling northbound in his Chevrolet Tracker when he lost control of his vehicle, crossed the median and struck a Mercedes, driven by Henry Allen Burnett, 67 of Glen Dale, Maryland, traveling southbound head on.

Burnett was killed as a result of the crash and Watson was transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital for his injuries, according to the news release from the sheriff's department.

Deputies said Burnett's next of kin has been notified and that DUI charges are pending for Watson.

The Westover Police Department, Star City Police Department, West Virginia State Police and the Pennsylvania State Police Waynesburg detachment responded to the scene and are assisting in the investigation.
