Summer Practice Period Check-In: Fairmont Senior Girls Basketball

FAIRMONT -

The Fairmont Senior girls basketball team was one of the most talented teams in the area during the 2011-2012 season.

The Lady Polar Bears finished with a 19-6 overall record but fell to Morgantown in the regional finals.

"Our expectations are like I told them. Our motto this year is 19 is not enough. My expectations are that we want to go to States. We want to contend for a championship," said FSHS Head Coach Corey Hines.

West Side only loses three seniors from last year's squad, but the losses are rather big as Katie Nunan heads off to Division-I Akron University and guard Brooklyn Little is lost due to graduation as well.

"Katie and Brooklyn, with the underclassmen last year, they left us and showed up what we have to do as leaders to lead the team like they did last year. We fell short but we did what we wanted and we came out happy because we did it all together," said senior Point Guard Jenny Bundy.

The Polar Bears are preparing for the move down to Class AA next season and they're excited for the new challenges ahead.

"This year we're really young," Bundy said. "We have about three seniors coming back and a couple juniors and all the rest are freshman and sophomores. So I think going to AA this year is a good opportunity for us to adjust since we're so young. Since we're smaller it'll give us a better chance of getting to States like we want to."

"What we have to do right now is get back to the basics," Coach Hines said. "Some of the younger girls have to work on some of the things that they don't know. We have to really focus on boxing out, rebounding, and getting up and down the floor. We want to be a transition team and for that to happen we got to play great defense."
