Summer Practice Period Check-In: Morgantown Girls Soccer

MORGANTOWN -

In Ashley Neal's first year as head coach of the Morgantown girl's soccer team she led the Mohigans all the way to a state championship.

In year two they're looking to make that back-to-back.

The Mohigans will return a bulk of their squad, but Coach Neal said she's using the summer practice time to build team unity. She said a lot of the girls play in several travel leagues and the practice time gives them an opportunity to regroup collectively as a team.

Morgantown knocked off Winfield on penalty kicks in the state title game. That win has surely opened the eyes of competitors around the state. This Morgantown team said they've become even closer during the summer practice period and are prepared to defend their title.

"It's hard to be the best and everyone knowing you're as good as you were last year because it fluctuates every year," Morgantown junior Mazie Cheesebrough said. "It's hard to be that team that everyone doesn't want to play and doesn't want to go up against. So it's going to be different than last year because we were totally the underdogs. Nobody expected us to win."

"It's just making sure they're composed and making sure that yes, they might know they have that target, but being able to play with it is really what I'm going to have to prepare these girls for. Now people are ready for them, people want them. It's always fun to knock off the champ. I love being the underdog, so I have to teach them to play like champs," Mohigans Head Coach Ashley Neal said.
