This three week summer practice period check-in brings us to historic Philippi and two more state champions.
It's good to be a Philip Barbour runner these days. The Lady Colts have won back-to-back state titles and the boys are coming off a championship as well. Katie Mahoney, Brianna Waybright and Wes Anderson all finished in the Top 10 at the State Meet.
You may think there's not a whole lot to fix after a double championship season, but the runners said they're working even harder than in years past, in order to stay at the top.
The team said the summer practice period is a friendly reminder of what's to come once August rolls around.
"It really gets us back in shape if we've been a little lazy since last season ended," junior runner Kate Mahoney said. "It gives us motivation for the upcoming season so we want to work hard and go to states."
"With these June practices it gives them a feeling of what the season is going to be like," third year head coach Melissa Kaiser said. "We teach them how to get a base and to start running right now and get that base built. So when August comes they don't get injured and they don't get hurt by trying to do too much, too fast."
