Law enforcement officers from the W.Va. Division of Natural Resources are taking steps to curtail Boating Under the Influence.
BUI was a contributing factor to 13-year highs in recreational boating fatalities across the country in 2011, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The DNR finished Operation Dry Water Sunday.
Officers patrolled local waterways for impaired boaters all weekend.
"It's unimaginable the affect that alcohol has on the water," said Cp. Carleton Wade, of the WVDNR Law Enforcement. "There are no marked lanes on the lake, as there is on the road. There's no way to know if someone is going over the line. It's a boater issue that people have to be cognizant of what they're doing or they're really going to get hurt out here."
The legal blood alcohol limit for the operator of a boat is .08. A BUI citation carries a fine, as well as jail time.
