MORGANTOWN -

You may have heard about Rock Top, Morgantown's new rooftop bar, restaurant and lounge. You may have also heard about the pools on its deck. But, we wanted to know what's beneath the surface. So we came on an off day to take a look around.

Rock Top is not the usual Morgantown establishment, Executive Chef Owen Huot said. People think more of Vegas or Miami when they visit, he said.

"We want people to say we're the new players in town," Huot said.

Rock Top opened about a month ago. The rooftop scenery and pool setting created an escape in the heart of Morgantown. Huot said the pools will open in two weeks.

"Here is a venue that provides great food and a great atmosphere. It's where people can feel safe and have a good time," he said.

Management created a gourmet comfort food menu fit for everyone from students to business professionals, it said.

"Our menu ranges from chicken-fried steak on rosemary mashed potatoes with a cheddar biscuit and homemade gravy. We have our fried chicken and waffles. The chicken is brined in Jim Beam," Huot said.

It also had a small indoor dining area.

"We're trying to do a gourmet take. We're trying to revitalize things you've eaten before, that you feel comfortable eating, but make it better," Huot said.

There was also "Not Your Grandmother's Meat Loaf," made with chorizo, short ribs and brisket. It came with garlic mashed potatoes, collard greens and fried angel hair pasta. Diners can also get truffle fries as an appetizer or with a meal, or the homemade chicken and waffled with a maple-balsamic glaze.

Rock Top only allows guests ages 21 or older. It's located at 341 Chestnut Street.
