MORGANTOWN -
The second and final round of the 2012 West Virginia Junior Amateur Golf Championship was soggy as rain soaked the course at The Pines Country Club in Morgantown, most of the day on Friday. That didn't stop more than 100 local young golfers from competing in the tournament.
Cale Wheeler from Morgantown took the lead by just one stroke and won his first ever West Virginia Junior Amateur Championship. The Pines is the home course for the University High School softball. Wheeler finished three over par on the par 71 course. Wheeler shot a 73 in the first round, a 72 on Friday in the second round and finished with a 145 total.
Just behind Wheeler, Scott Depot's Chris Williams finished second. The two players were tied after Thursday's first round. Williams finished the tournament with a 146 total score.
Wheeler won the 15-16 boys division while Williams won the 17-18 boys division. A playoff had to decide the winner of the 13-14 year old boys division. Red House's Alex Hamrick and Bridgeport's Marco Oliverio played out an extra hole, with Hamrick winning the division. For the 10-12 boys division, Oceana's Colin Bowles picked up the win
On the girls side, Lauryn Davidson from Vienna won the 15-18 division, finishing at 170. Adeena Shears finished tied for 27th overall and won the 10-14 year old girls division with a two day total score of 157.
