Fresh Air Fund Gives NY Kids A Wild and Wonderful Experience

FAIRMONT -

Representatives of the Fresh Air Fund in West Virginia gave New York City kids an outdoor adventure Sunday.

Many of the children in the program had never been outside the city.

"The very first day, the little boy we're hosting, he was terrified because he had never been around any farm animals. Within five minutes he was holding a chicken and the next day I saw him kissing a goat," said Lisa Galford, a Fresh Air host.

The Fresh Air Fund is all about unique experiences. Since 1877, the fund has taken 1.7 million New York City children from low-income communities on vacations across the country.

"It's been a very positive experience," Galford said. "We are looking forward to doing it again… We've been excited and we've been having a great time."

For a few weeks over the summer the host families took in a child.

They spent some days at the pool, some camping and others just hanging with their new family.

"Mathew is like, my brother form another mother, if you want to call it like that," said Jacob Eubank, a member of a host family. "We call him on his birthday, we call him on Christmas, and when he's here we do a whole lot of stuff. It's really fun."

While many kids were shy, others were excited to take in every new thing that comes their way.
