Restaurant Road Trip: Brookside Inn and Retreat Center

AURORA -

There's a place that's considered one of the East Coast's premier four-season vacation areas where the menu changes daily.

Brookside Inn and Retreat Center allows you to enjoy clear cool, mountain air and relaxation in the timeless tradition of an Allegheny Mountain lodge where pampering, good conversation, and good food are paramount.

"The inn is part of a long history of hospitality here in the Aurora area, at one time there were over 500 guest beds, and I'm continuing that tradition," said Michele Reeves, owner.

Overlooking Cathedral State Park off Route 50, the bed and breakfast is ideal for a quiet getaway. It first opened in 1991, and reopened as a bed and breakfast in 1995. The shingle style house built in 1895 by an industrialist from Cleveland has seen very little done in the way of change.

"It had hemlock slab siding all around the first floor, it had the shingles on the second floor, and I have a photograph on the wall that was done in 1936 and it looks very similar to what it looks like now," Reeves said.

The inn features four guest rooms that are spacious and furnished with your comfort in mind. Thursday through Sunday, the inn offers a cozy full service bar and nightly small plate dinners all prepared from local meats and organic produce.

Reeves prepared for us a homemade flatbread pizza with a blend of homemade sauce, topped off with cheeses and a choice of three toppings. The menu changes daily and that's why Reeves said she hasn't had any complaints from her guests.

"The goal is try and take foods that people are use to eating and creating them in unique ways," Reeves said.

Reeves said your stay will be memorable.

"People walk in the house and has not been changed over the years, it's really a lovely old building and I feel proud to be custodian of this building."

The Brookside Inn also offers a four to six course dinner with music once a month. On July 21st Aurora Celtic will perform music.
