Monday marked the beginning of the 2012 fall sports season for most high school fall sports.
Football, soccer, golf, cross country and cheerleading were all allowed to hold their first practices of the season. Volleyball begins practice Monday, Aug 6.
The big storylines North Central West Virginia will see this sports season will probably revolve around the reclassification of all the state high schools. The reclassification numbers were released last fall, but didn't take effect until the fall of 2012. There will not be another reclassification for four years.
Five area schools dropped down from Class 'AAA' to 'AA'. Bridgeport has moved between the two classes before. Robert C. Byrd is dropping down for the first time since the school was built in the '90s. All three Marion County high schools are also moving down to 'AA'. Fairmont Senior, East Fairmont and North Marion have always been 'AAA' in modern history so it is a big change for those schools.
