Believe it or not the high school golf season started a week ago, Monday, July 30.
Monday, Aug 6, at the Pete Dye golf course in Bridgeport, 28 high school teams from around the state took part in the very first Pete Dye High School Invitational.
Nearly 112 golfers invaded the course Monday morning. With lots of participants, 17 of the 28 teams were from our area, including Morgantown, University, Fairmont Senior, East Fairmont, Elkins and Buckhannon-Upshur, just to name a few.
Bridgeport Head Coach Fred Wilhelm said a tournament at the Pete Dye course has been a long time coming.
"Well a bunch of coaches throughout the years, this is my 11th year coaching golf, have been wanting to come and play Pete Dye. They've asked me year after year if we could ever get over there and I said eventually one of these years we'll put on a tournament. We started it this year and hopefully we can keep it continued," said Coach Wilhelm.
