Marion County Board of Education Faces Unexpected Expense

Posted: Updated:

Work will move forward at East Fairmont Junior High.

Superintendent of Schools Gary Price is asking for help from the School building authority to pay for the work.

City construction's bid on the $15.7 million project was approved this spring.

Price said the company found part of a basement and a swimming pool from a former house on the property and the board had to use over two-hundred-thousand dollars from its contingency fund to remove it.

"All kinds of materials like that must be removed and then you have to bring in dirt and compact the dirt so its safe to build on it and you wont have your building shifting," Price said. "And that project there just removing the part of the basement and swimming pool and replacing it with appropriate soil cost almost a quarter million dollars."

Price is currently waiting to hear back from the SBA.

He said the school will open by January 2014.
