A West Union man died Thursday of unknown causes after he interfered with a police search at his home.

Members of the W.Va. State Police obtained information Thursday related to the location of a fugitive, John Bowman, in Doddridge County, according to a news release from state police.

State police said Bowman has current active warrants for manufacturing with the intent to deliver marijuana.

A search warrant was obtained by state police for the West Union residence of Elton Wine, 71. State police said their special response team was utilized to execute the search warrant based on the extensive and violent criminal histories of both Bowman and Wine.

During the execution of the search warrant, troopers encountered Wine. State police said Wine was uncooperative and attempted to actively interfere with the search for Bowman.

After state police gained cooperation, Wine indicated he was having difficulty breathing. Troopers then provided assistance, first aid and summoned EMS, which was stationed nearby.

Troopers said Wine became unresponsive and died at the residence.

Wine's body was taken to the office of the Chief Medical Examiners to determine cause of death, according to the news release.

Troopers were not able to apprehend Bowman.
