Things got a little heated at the Kanawha County School Board meeting when the issue of year-round schools was brought up by one of the board members Monday night.

Right now, there are no plans to make any Kanawha County schools year round besides the two that already are.

This debate over year-round schools was brought up again by board member Bill Raglin, but for a different reason.

Raglin expressed concerns about students at year-round schools who aren't taking advantage of additional tutoring opportunities.

These kids go to school nine weeks on and three weeks off. During those off days, they can go and get extra help if they need it.

The board discussed the low attendance levels during what is called 'intercession' and how they could improve them.

Superintendent Ron Duerring said the county has no plans to make other schools year-round.

He said Monday night's discussion was unrelated to a topic that many parents are split on.

Duerring said changing the county to a year-round calendar is a huge decision that is not on the county's radar.

"I think first of all, we'd have to do a real educating of the community about what year-round meant and what that would mean for the district as a whole," he said.

Still, since there are two year-round schools in the county, it seems like the debate will continue to rage on as to whether or not year-round schools are the way to go.
