After reading about how other churches were providing better nutrition for school students in the area, Reverend Carolyn Nettles wanted to see what her church, Stone Coal United Methodist, could do to help.
After reading about how other churches were providing better nutrition for school students in the area, Reverend Carolyn Nettles wanted to see what her church, Stone Coal United Methodist, could do to help.
West Virginia University's Women's & Gender Studies Program paired up with Girls on the Run of Monongalia County to screen an award-winning documentary.
Miss Representation shows how the media focuses on outer beauty and sex, exploits women, and gives young boys and girls the wrong impression.
Organizers said they hope it will empower those kids to be who they are and love themselves as well as encourage the rest of us to stand up for what's right.
Laurie Abildso, a member of Girls on the Run, stressed the importance of events like this.
"There's so much out there that can be confusing to young girls, they don't see a whole lot in the way of strong powerful women and so I think its important to have a discussion with the university and with community members," Abildso said.
Organizers sold buttons with empowering messages like "Love Your Body" and "Start a Revolution - Stop Hating Your Body" for $1. The event itself was free and open to the public.
