Beard Growing Competition Begins at WVU

Posted: Updated:

Wednesday began the beard growing competition as part of West Virginia University's Mountaineer Week.

In front of their friends, daring students shaved their face in hopes that they can grow the biggest, thickest beard at West Virginia.

Organizers said the annual competition is so popular because students have a great love for the fully bearded mountaineer mascot.

"Our mascot is the Mountaineer, one of his signatures is that he has a fabulous beard," said Mountaineer Week Advisor Jackie Riggleman. "So for people to try to be able to match the mountaineer, or even grow a better one seems to be a big draw for students."

The competition will be judged October 31. The winner will receive a $100 cash prize.
