With election day one month away, the United Mine Workers of America
continues to sit out the presidential race for the first time in 40 years.
On Friday, the union announced it's backing Democratic U.S. House
and Senate candidates in 16 states.
But the Coal Miners Political Action Committee didn't
endorse either Republican Mitt Romney or Democrat Barack Obama. It says neither
has demonstrated he will be on the side of union members and their families.
The union backed Obama in 2008. Spokesman Phil Smith says no
final decision has been made on whether anyone will ultimately get the nod this
year.
In West Virginia,
it's backing incumbent U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin and Rep. Nick Rahall. In Virginia,
it's backing U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine and two Democratic congressional
challengers.
