National Weather Service Awards Fairmont Company With $9.6 Million Contract

Posted: Updated:

The National Weather Service has awarded Global Science and Technology a $9.6 million contract.

The Fairmont company will use the funds to add hundreds of mobile weather stations around the country. The company will collect the information and relay it to the National Weather Service giving the organization access to new sources of data.

"But there are all these weather stations that are out there that the government doesn't own," said Paul Heppner, of Global Science and Technology. "The idea is to say, boy there's a lot of good data out there, the weather service can benefit from that data, let's bring it in to the weather service."

The company will work with observation stations in 28 states. They hope to add more mobile observation units throughout the country.
