The Triune Halleck Volunteer Fire Department taught Monongalia County children about fire safety last week, thanks in part to Sparky's Wish List.

The department created the registry through the National Fire Protection Association. Community members could buy items directly for fire prevention education, like activity books and DVDs.

In a news release, the department said it "was fortunate to receive items that were requested."

The department visited more than 120 preschoolers at Mountainview Elementary and Kinder Haus Child Care during Fire Prevention Week.

According to the State Fire Marshal's Office, West Virginia continues to rank high among fire related deaths in the country. Recent figures show that 64 West Virginians died in preventable fires from June 30, 2011 to July 1, 2012, according to the news release.
