Several members of West Virginia University's student radio station, U92, are in New York City for the College Music Journal Awards.

U92 is up for several awards, including one for a show based on local music called "The Morgantown Sound."

A student DJ said being a part of the station is beneficial to more than just communication students.

"It lays a good foundations for their communication skills, their speech awareness," said Matthew Fouty, of U92 Radio. "It's a big thing learning what, kind of hearing yourself, what you're going to say, before you say it. Because once you communicate it, you can't un-communicate it."

The CMJ Music Marathon Convention begins Thursday.
