SALEM -
The Salem City Council held a meeting Tuesday night to discuss numerous issues. Many residents were in attendance to voice their opinions and to hear the outcome of some highly debated topics.
First on the agenda was the "police fee" that is listed on residents' water bills. Residents question why they are paying a police fee when there isn't an actual police force in town.
The decision was to postpone the topic until the next meeting. For now, the police fee will remain on the bills.
"We have no local police at this time, we're still being covered by the county… but council has decided to table that motion and go ahead and add it on to this month's bill, and maybe next month we can give them the three dollars credit" said Joe Davis, City Manager.
Another item up for discussion was the Business and Occupation Tax on Salem International University. Council voted 3-2 to relieve SIU of its B&O taxes, but in order to pass the motion, at least four council members needed to vote in favor of dropping the taxes.
This has been a debate going on for the last year, and the council still hasn't come to a decision.
