Barbour County Group Makes Final Push For School Bond And Levy

Posted: Updated:

Election Day is just under two weeks away, and concerned residents of Barbour County hope that six is the magic number for two school funding proposals.

The district wants to get voter approval for two new measures: a bond to fund new athletic facilities and an excess levy to fund other educational programs throughout the district. It's an effort that's been underway for a while, and with so little time left to bring the vote home, Superintendent Joe Super is stressing their importance to area voters.

"What we want to do today is try to give folks an understanding of where we were when I came on board last year, what we had to address, what we have addressed, where we are," said Super.

This is the sixth time a levy has come up for a vote in the county. A group called Barbour Citizens For Quality Schools has been pushing hard to make those proposals a reality. Chairman Mike Cvechko said it's had plenty of help from Super as well.

"I'm very optimistic Super has been working very hard around the county, promoting and educating the general public just about the issues and the dire straits of our school system," Cvechko said.

Since support for school levies has been low in the past, the group has been out promoting the measures, and it wants people to educate themselves before voting on their children's education.

"So I would just ask people to make an informed decision come November sixth and not rely on hearsay or rumor and innuendo," said Cvechko.
