Ritchie County Humane Society Welcomes New Shelter, New Puppies

HARRISVILLE -

January 13, 2010 was a bad day at the Ritchie County Humane Society.

"About 2 o'clock in the morning. I received a call the shelter burned down. It was so tragic, so hard to lose all of those beautiful animals," said Kitty Ray, volunteer at the Ritchie County Humane Society.

But with a new building and lots of loving animals, the shelter is back on its feet again.

"Our new shelter has more space. And people can see the animals better. Especially when they are not in cages, they can see how they interact better," Ray said.

The shelter opened early this week. And it's been a line of surprises since then.

"We were blessed Halloween day with nine baby puppies. Born here at the shelter," Ray said.

The shelter expects those puppies will be ready for adoption by Christmas time.

As it turns out, October was a successful month for the shelter: a new building, new puppies, and a high adoption rate. Thirty eight animals were brought into the shelter last month, 31 were adopted and seven were fostered.

Hopes are high for November.

"We are almost overcrowded right now with cats dogs," Ray said.

The shelter has 55 dogs and 45 cats ready for adoption. You can find out more about adoptions and how to volunteer by clicking here or by calling 304-643-4721.
