The journey to the polls to cast a ballot is a familiar one for most West Virginians recently.
Today marks the seventh statewide election for West Virginia in the past 910 days, which spreads out to one election every four months, according to Jake Glance, communications officer for the West Virginia Secretary of State's Office.
Polls opened for the general election at 6:30 a.m., and they will close at 7:30 p.m. Many areas of the Mountain State are still feeling the effects of superstorm Sandy, which brought high winds, heavy rain and several inches of snow to the state last week.
Secretary of State Natalie Tennant announced Nov. 5 changes to the polling places in Lewis, Preston, Randolph, Tucker and Upshur counties — the areas hit the hardest by blizzard-like conditions. All voter information, including the temporary voting locations in those county's precincts, can be found at www.wvsos.com or click here.
West Virginians could vote early again this year, starting Oct. 24 through Nov. 3. Tennant said Nov. 3 about 10 percent of West Virginia's registered voters had cast early and absentee ballots for a total of 120,395 votes. In the 2008 general election, more than 153,000 people cast early ballots, which totaled nearly 22 percent of all votes cast. The overall turnout that year was 59 percent.
