Red Cross Continues to Distribute Meals in Buckhannon

BUCKHANNON -

Thousands of Upshur County residents are still without power, but luckily for them, the Red Cross is there to help.

"We'll provide them with a bed, blankets, three meals a day, heat, a little bit of comfort, and a safe place to rest until their power comes back," said shelter manager Sam Murr.

The Red Cross set up a shelter at the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church in Buckhannon on October 30, and it still has residents staying there.

"My mom has been here for a whole week; her power has been out, and she still doesn't have it yet" said David Rowan, Jr., a volunteer at the shelter. "She'll be turning 81 in December, and you know, I'm just glad that there are shelters around where people and the elderly can go to."

All members of the Red Cross team at this location are all from North Carolina, and they arrive and leave as a team.

"Our team trains together, we practice together, we do drills together so that we can respond very quickly in setting up a shelter and going out. We arrive as a team, we end process as a team, we leave as a team" Murr said.

They brought nine members from North Carolina and have volunteers from the area too, including a very generous eight-year-old.

"My mom said you can either help with the Red Cross team, or go trick or treating, and I decided to help do this because we thought it would be nice" said volunteer Payton Frame.

Payton has been at the shelter helping serve food everyday since it opened.
