Winter Weather Posse Helps Locals In Need

Posted: Updated:
MONONGALIA COUNTY -

The Winter Weather Posse is a volunteer group that helps people in need prepare their homes for the winter weather.

"I had been in an auto accident three years ago and have not been able to do my normal gardening and house cleaning and so forth. So she brought a group of volunteer people to do my yard," said Jane Kiger.

Kiger is not the only one who got the help she needed. More than 200 volunteers came to went to more than 40 houses. They do something as simple as picking up sticks and cleaning up leaves.

Ed Cole is the Chapter Advisor for a fraternity on WVU's campus. HIs fraternity had nearly 100 volunteers help out.

"It's just a great feeling to actually come out and give back to the community. One of the things that our fraternity tries to do is come out and help the university and help the community as well, because the image for fraternities are so bad or taboo anymore," said Cole.

Students from local high schools also helped.

The way you get the weather posse to come out is simply by a referral.

"We usually go to churches, people in the community ask them if there's anyone's in need and they pretty much send us the referrals and names of people and then we go do house visits to see what exactly it is that they need and what it is that we can do for them," Cole said.

One of the most important parts of the day is everyone coming together to have a good time.

"I can't imagine so many young people doing this annually and the appear to be having fun and I just can't thank them enough," said Kiger.

The group came together to enjoy some food after it put in a hard days work.
