West Virginia University saluted area veterans Monday during its annual Veterans Appreciation Breakfast.
Hundreds filled the Erickson Alumni Hall at WVU.
Major General James Hoyer, the adjutant general of the West Virginia National Guard was the keynote speaker.
Veterans said the holiday is a special way to connect with fellow servicemen.
"It the contribution we make as a whole, we actually allow freedom to exist in a lot of ways and we come home and contribute as well," said Lt. Colonel Daniel Rice, military science professor. "We do our best. Its something we pride ourselves on it's something I try to impart to our future veterans, our cadets here."
Jamie Summerlin and Jack Bowman, the civilian aide to the Secretary of the Army for West Virginia also spoke during the meal.
