Operation Christmas Child Kicks Off National Collection Week

MONONGALIA COUNTY -

The third week of November each year is special to Operation Christmas Child.

This week is National Collection Week and Monday night kicked off their shoe box drive. The organization has been donating to needy children around the world for twenty years.

"We collect shoe boxes to send to over one hundred countries around the world. Countries that have poverty, disease, war, disaster."

The shoe boxes contain items that might be hard to come by in countries with these problems. When people pack their shoe boxes they're encouraged to put things like candy, toothbrushes, toys and pencils.

The Morgantown Team had help collecting the shoe boxes from the American Heritage Girls. Molly Gwaltney and other American Heritage Girls brought their own boxes and material to give back to needy kids.

"I put in a stuffed animal, some socks, toothbrushes and toothpaste," said Molly Gwaltney. "I got a pack of three tooth brushes so if they have family members or anything they can give one to them."

"Stuff for a girl or boy ages.. and the ages are 2-4 or 5-9 or 10-14. I did a 5-9 year old," said American Heritage Girl, Emily Gwaltney.

Anyone can donate a shoe box to the project. Visit the Operation Christmas Child web site to see where your local drop offs are located.
