Davis & Elkins College confirmed the death of Roy Simms, an assistant coach for the men's basketball team at D&E.
Carol Schuler, Associate Vice President for Communications & Marketing at D&E, said Simms collapsed at a basketball practice on Saturday afternoon and was taken in ambulance to Davis Memorial Hospital. Simms later died.
Schuler said Simms had a pre-existing heart condition, but could not confirm the official cause of death.
Schuler released this statement "The Davis & Elkins College community is deeply saddened by our loss. Our hearts are with Coach Sims's family."
Simms was also a former head coach at Elkins High School for the boys basketball team.
Prior to that Simms, played four years of Division I college basketball at the University of Detroit from 1979-1983.
David and Elkins will hold a memorial service and eulogy on Saturday, December 1, at 7 p.m. in the Harper McNeeley Auditorium.
