Hunters across the area have spent their weekends at stores like Jerry's Sporting Goods in Horner stocking up on the latest gear, and making sure they have everything they need to kick their gun buck season off right. And for Kelly Lane, the beginning of hunting season is a family affair.

"Well we usually get up first thing in the morning and head over to here on Georgetown Road, get up bright and early and sit there until at least somebody gets something," Lane said.

Lane took time Sunday morning to be sure they were all ready, even getting some new gear for her daughter, who joins the family on the hunts, too. While the entire weekend gets busy, the staff at Jerry's said Sunday night is one of its biggest days of the year.

"Busiest time of the week is on Sunday, all the late hunters that forget they need shells, forget they haven't sighted their gun in, they need a bore sight, or something like that, and we usually don't get out of here until late, trying to get our customers satisfied," said James Swenskie, an employee at Jerry's.

While some hunters go out for the sport of it, trying to find the nicest rack on a buck they can, many in the area save the meat from the animals to use throughout the year. For the Lanes, it's a bit of both.

"Both fun and food, we all like deer meat, put it in the freezer and have it all year long, and whatnot but a little bit for fun, too. Getting out there and seeing who can get the biggest one. 'Is he going to kill a bigger one, or am I'?" asked Lane.

That's a question Lake and her husband will have to resolve this year. She didn't want to say exactly how successful they were, but she did say that last year, they tied.
