BRIDGEPORT -

As the holidays approach, Toys for Tots donation sites will be increasingly appearing.

On Monday afternoon, Toys-R-Us in Bridgeport, one of the drop-off locations, was the host to several members of the Marine Corps Reserves, who were buying more than $3,000 worth of toys for local children in need.

Sergeant Will Weber, a local Toys for Tots coordinator, said the money for more than 300 toys came from Toys-R-Us shoppers.

"Basically what happens is when you go through and make your purchase, Toys-R-Us asks you if you want to make a donation to Toys for Tots. And over the course of the last year people in the community have been doing that and we had about $3,200 to spend today, and that's what all these toys are from" Weber said.

They bought 358 toys, to be exact. The local Toys for Tots actually had about $6000 to spend, but Weber said they chose to only use half, and then use the rest towards the end of the season so they can buy more.

Weber will be at the Toys-R-Us near the Meadowbrook Mall from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. every weekend until distribution, in his dress blues, to encourage people to donate.

If you would like to donate toys or money, you can visit the local Toys for Tots campaign website here.
