Monongalia County Commission Debates Prospective TIF Districts

Posted: Updated:

On Wednesday, the Monongalia County Commission discussed plans on an Interstate 79 interchange, in conjunction with a new baseball complex.

The commission has been working with developer Mon-View on setting up two TIF districts used to finance the interchange and nearby land development.

One sticking point is setting the date on the tax base.

County Commissioner Bill Bartolo says as the order stands now, nearly $200,000 in tax money would be pushed into a project that won't benefit the community for several years.

"Right now we have a lot of things going on now in Monongalia County. We're looking for funds to renovate the federal building that we bought for a new judicial center. And I think the people would be better served by taking tax dollars and putting it to use now," Bartolo said.

"As every project, we've got a few things to work through to satisfy the commission's concerns, and I believe we'll be able to that in short order," said Brian Helmick, legal council for Mon-View.

As the order stands, the tax base would be established in 2011. If the commission doesn't pass it by the end of the year, the tax base would be established as of July of 2012.
